A Different Kind of College Ranking
Article | Kevin Carey | Washington Monthly | September 2, 2009
Last week, Washington Monthly released its annual College Guide. Co-edited by Education Sector Policy Director Kevin Carey, Washington Monthly has put together a "different kind of college ranking," one that places emphasis on what colleges are doing for students and our country. The best colleges, they say, are those that work the hardest to help disadvantaged students succeed in a competitive job market, contribute to new research and scientific discovery, and urge students to give back to their communities. And the top performers are not the usual suspects.

The Revenue-to-Cost Spiral in Higher Education
Analysis | Robert E. Martin | John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy | August 2009
The principal/agent problem, the nonprofit status of colleges and universities, and the emphasis on reputation maximization lead to a bias against reform, a preference toward increasing revenues, and a revenue-to-cost spiral in higher education. The cost increases not only create an unnecessary burden on students, their families, and society as a whole, but they represent a significant wealth transfer from families and the public to higher education.
