GREEN DOT SCHOOLS
Los Angeles, CaliforniaSpurred by the failure rate of high schools in Los Angeles, Steve Barr founded Green Dot Schools, a set of public schools in the area with a few wild twists. Instead of creating entirely new schools, Green Dot takes failing schools and converts them to smaller public charters. The standards of Green Dot Schools are known as the “Six Tenets”: 1) Small, Safe, Personalized Schools; 2) High Expectations; 3) Local Control; 4) Parent Participation; 5) Get Every Dollar into the Classroom; and 6) Keep Schools Open Later. As of today, Green Dot has over 17 affiliated schools, including several specialized schools for artistic or technological focus, and a school in New York City. In 2009, three Green Dot charters were recognized as California Distinguished Schools.
